Call to set up a consultation at one of our Manhattan offices today.

What is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is a disorder that disrupts a person’s breathing throughout the night. With obstructive sleep apnea, soft tissue collapses in the throat or other airway blockage results in shallow breathing or a stoppage in breathing altogether. While some experience only a short pause, others can have their breathing stop for minutes at a time, in multiple occurrences throughout the night. Eventually, sleep apnea causes chronic fatigue and an unsafe drop in oxygen levels.

Since those with this disorder are asleep when episodes occur, it often goes undiagnosed. Additionally, your dentist or doctor does not have an official blood test to detect sleep apnea. Typically, a family member or partner will be the first to recognize the signs, which is often loud and excessive snoring.

Beyond causing a persistent feeling of weariness, regularly falling short of the appropriate amount of sleep can result in cardiovascular complications, making this an important condition to correct.

Dr. Martin Bassiur has dedicated countless hours to education and training on the subject of sleep apnea and oral appliance therapy for the condition. He is currently the director of the Dental Sleep Apnea department at Mt. Sinai Medical Center in Manhattan, where he educates other dental professionals on effective techniques and treatment options for this condition.

Once a sleep study has been conducted and a diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea has been confirmed, we will help you determine the best course of treatment. Our team will discuss with you whether a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine or one of the dozens of oral appliances available is most beneficial in keeping your airway clear during sleep.

Perhaps what gives Dr. Bassiur such great perspective when helping treat patients with this disorder is that he’s successfully used sleep appliances himself for over 17 years. In fact, he has personally used every sleep apnea appliance that he recommends. He and Dr. Jennifer Bassiur have made it their focus to help patients who are unable to tolerate CPAP treatment find alternatives that promote a restful and undisturbed night’s sleep.
